The university has a long history of economic teaching and research with its first Econ department established in 1926. The College of Economics and Trade (CET), located at the northern campus, is a relatively young college established on the legacy of the former Hunan Institute of Public Finance and Economics.” The college owns three departments (international trade, economics and public finance) and is swiftly expanding with specific focus on international trade and urban/regional economics. While 70% of its faculty members has studied and done research overseas, the college is urgently seeking international academic cooperation to produce high-quality journal articles and academic projects.

Hunan University, with its predecessor being the Yuelu Academy founded in year 976, is located in the breath-taking Mount Yuelu national scenic area in Changsha, close to the Xiang River (one of the largest tributaries of the Yangtze River). Shaoshan, the birthplace of Chairman Mao Zedong, is 60 miles south of Changsha. The world-renowned Zhangjiajie national park is 200 miles west of Changsha.
