Society for Phenomenology and Media (SPM) invites proposals for its 21st International Conference: What We Say about Media and What That Says about Us: Medium, Its Message, and Geopolitics.

Dr. Rosemary Rizo-Patrón de Lerner of Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) will deliver the keynote address.

The conference will take place from March 13th to March 15th, 2019 in Puebla, Mexico. It is sponsored by the School of Plastic and Audiovisual Arts (ARPA) at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP).

Abstracts are due January 31st, 2019. Please submit abstracts (200 words) or proposals for 3-person panels (250 words) to EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=spm2019.

SPM invites papers on all aspects of media. The only necessary condition is that the paper be concerned with media, either in practice or theory.

Since 1999, conference papers have dealt with the Internet, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, medieval manuscripts and print, radio and sound, dance, stage drama, TV, film, painting, sequential art (comix), social/anti-social media, fake news, etc.

Theoretical papers have focused on visualization, mediations of inter/subjectivity, empathy, ethics, media dis/embodiment, and the specifics of individual media. Many papers raised questions in the philosophy of technology, epistemology, media ontology, or aesthetics. Others situated their investigations within the political and economic context of specific media to address apartheid, exploitation, or propaganda.

SPM does not advocate for any one school of thought. Analytic philosophy, language philosophy, phenomenology, post-phenomenology, hermeneutics, and Marxist approaches are all welcome.
